Bridge algae

Bridge over apedale beck

The wooden footbridge over Apedale Beck, near the railway, is overhung by trees. It is a damp, shady place, ideal for algae on the handrails and posts. A number of animal species use this environment, including aphids, ladybirds and microscopic protists. An example, a rotifer, is included here.
