Lagopus lagopus

Red Grouse

Lagopus lagopus, Red Grouse, is a native game bird found on heather moorland. It is one of the few birds that overwinters on the moor. They feed on ling heather, Calluna vulgaris, although the young are fed insects for their higher protein value. The moors around Redmire are managed for grouse shooting, which involves mainating conditions for heather growth.
